About the book production process
Editing
An ‘edit’ can include a wide range of tasks. Once you
have specified further details on the product development process
and your timelines, we will be able to tailor a quote for you.
The following are a few points to consider,
which could affect your quote:
 |
Your target audience. Are you writing
for academics, business, English second-language speakers, kids? |
 |
The level of involvement you require
from the editor. For example, would you like a simple grammar
and spelling check or do you require an accuracy check as well? |
 |
The quality of the manuscript (language,
flow, formatting, etc.). A manuscript that needs a heavy edit
will have will have poor grammar, spelling and logical flow. |
 |
Your schedule. |
Typesetting
If a book is typeset, it is run from MS Word into a programme called
Adobe Indesign. This is the standard software used to produce books,
brochures, and anything that is printed. Indesign allows for neat,
specific and detailed styling.
Note
|
Word
is not powerful enough to cope with large files or accurate
styling. Furthermore, when making PDF files for printing from
a Word document, files corrupt much more easily. Printing from
a Word document is difficult and more expensive.
However, for small, straightforward publications, it is possible
to format very neatly in Word, keeping typesetting costs down.
|
Once the manuscript is run in, the typesetter prints out the pages
for checking. For example, checking by authors, editor, etc. Any changes
or comments are then made on the printed copy, which goes back to
the setter to make. There are usually 3-6 rounds of printing and checking
until the book is ‘perfect’. Then the setter makes a PDF
file, which is sent to the printers.
We are happy to elaborate on each of these, and other considerations,
at your request.
