Competitions

At ReadHill, we recognise that South Africa is teeming with untapped writers. Most people don’t consider themselves able to write well or create powerful prose. That is why the aim of our competitions is to encourage potential writers to test their skills. So go on, give it a try. You have nothing to lose, but so much to win!

Below, you will find a summary of each competition. Following that are the links to the specific details such as closing dates and prizes.

Why School Isn’t Boring
Learning is a fact of life. Whether you receive a formal education in a school or even if you have a practical education by learning from your elders, you are still learning.
We want to know what makes your learning experience different, as a current learner of South Africa (Grades 1-12). What gave excitement, or anything else, to you that made the learning experience unique? We want to compile these stories into a book that will show the reader the magic of South Africa, through the perspective of a learner.

Here are a few great extracts from entrants around the country:

Once, at school today
I wrote a poem that would change the world …
Gilbert Mubangizi, Gr 11, Westville Boys’ High School

Nobody moved, except a small boy sitting on the teachers chair spun around, ‘I’ve been expecting you,’ he said in calm, quiet little voice. ‘They’re all,’ he hesitated, ‘dead’.
Extract from runner-up entry, Kelly Oldham, Gr 7, Radford House

My mysterious yoghurt eating school, crawling with filthy octopuses …
Kyle Naidoo, Gr 6, Athoton Primary

When I returned, everyone (with their books and files) had vanished! … I looked in the computer centre, the library and even in the bathrooms! There was still no sign of anybody! Eventually, I went to the art teacher, whose class is next door to ours. … She said that I should wait in her class, until I found them again. I turned around, only to find Miss Harrage standing behind me! …
“We were in class the entire time, we haven’t moved a muscle!”
“But you WEREN’T THERE!” I said.
Tayla Stephen, Gr 7, St Andrew’s School for Girls

The boy struggled to read or write but didn’t beg down, the boy was in the dark side of the earth.
Thabiso Tolomo, Gr 7, Western Reefs Primary School

“Get your blazers on! Quick she is coming!” Standing as tall as we could, neat and tidy as we waited anxiously for our marching orders. … her eyes pierced into my skin as she looked from my stone black shows up to my starched collar that beamed brightly. … in fact she had been stand in front of me for quite sometime … I went over my mental checklist. “What could be wrong! I made sure everything was perfect! This can’t be happening!”
Chey Warren Ramalho, Gr 9, St Stithians College

Assembly. Boys file in one after the other in never-ending lines from all corners like a giant ant-hole where ants scurry in but would rather be going in the opposite direction. After all the seats have been taken, the air is seemed to have been sucked out by everyone’s last breath before the headmaster enters.
Zafeer Motala, Gr 11, Rondebosch Boys’ High School
